Randburg Diggers produced their best display of the season when they smashed Inquina 36-17 in Fourways on Saturday scoring five tries in the process.

“You always got the impression we would win,” said coach Gerhard Swart. “The players defended very aggressively in the first 20 minutes to keep Inquina out. Inquina eventually scored, but that was all we needed. After the kick-off, we were on the attack for the remainder of the match and never looked like losing.

“Vice-captain Andrew Collison scored first when he ran straight through the midfield defence and soon after hooker Viwe Mjiwu scored when most of Inquina’s backs were drawn into a ruck. We led 14-7 at the break, but were unlucky not to have a bigger lead.”

After the break, Randburg wasted no time in setting the pace for the rest of the game when winger Mark Snow scored from a cross-kick by flyhalf Etienne Botha.

“Inquina scored two quick tries before the end of the game. We then started with a run in our own 22 after a turnover ball and flanker Dustin Hoffman finished the move after a great run by captain Riaan Matthys. This was probably Randburg Diggers’ best try of the season.”

According to Swart, it was a team effort if ever there was one.

“The tight five laid a very good platform and really dominated their opposition. The loose trio combined well and Dustin won a lot of turnovers.”

“Scrumhalf Lucas Sadler gave Inquina headaches around the fringes whilst our centres, Andrew and Grason Mack, also made a lot of breaks in midfield.

“Winger Fulton Allerdyce kicked really well and only missed one shot at goal. The Man of the Match went to Riaan Matthys for his tremendous leadership on the field.

“The win means a great deal to the players as well as the club. It is good to have a win after some disappointing results. I am really proud of the guys as they showed tremendous heart,” a chuffed Swart said.

Randburg Diggers have a bye this weekend before taking on Wanderers.
